About

DC Rescue Dogs Founder Cherie with two small puppiesDC Rescue Dogs is a non-profit organisation based in Taupiri, just North of Hamilton, New Zealand with dogs and puppies in foster homes throughout the Waikato and Auckland regions.

Cherie Baker first started rescuing dogs in 2012, taking in dogs in need from pounds and owner surrenders throughout the North Island.  DC Rescue Dogs was originally named for Cherie and her partner David’s initials.

As more people joined the team, we grew quickly, and now rescue and rehome over 250 dogs a year thanks to our network of admins, foster parents and supporters. We care for them, do all the necessary work that all dogs deserve (desex, vaccinate, council register, microchip, registration with NZCAR, flea/worm), then place them into well-vetted forever homes nationwide.

Over the years we have had almost every breed of dog imaginable, from the usual “Pound Specials” through to purebred Huskies, German Shepherds, Border Collies, Chihuahua’s, Chinese Cresteds, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Kelpies, Dogue de Bordeaux and more.

All of our team members are volunteers working full time jobs, so every cent the rescue makes goes back into the dogs.

We are a registered Charitable Trust, Registration Number – CC52420
Charitable Trust 2628771

The best part about rescuing dogs is seeing them go from scared and hungry dogs to healthy, happy members of the family. When they get in somebody’s car and are too excited to be going to their new homes that they don’t even look back to say goodbye, we know we’ve done our job.

You can find us on Facebook, TradeMe and PetsOnTheNet, and read more about what we do here.
